Training Module 4: Ladders Updates Training Module 4: LaddersTrainee NameSupervisor nameDateUsing LadderDemonstrate how to pick up, carry and put down ladder.PassFailGet employee to try. Demonstrate how to load and unload ladder from vehicle. Using roll bar at the back to slide the ladder on and off. Making sure to emphasise proper manual handling techniques. Refer to method statement of using a ladder.PassFailGet employee to try. Show how to use step ladder. Open step ladder up and lock off braces. Explain not using top 2 steps. Explain how to position ladder in front of window. Discuss use of step ladders on balconies and other dangerous areas. Show how to use “A” frame ladder. Stable when placed into corner of window frame. Unsuitable for flat surfaces: example of window cleaner who fell from “A” ladder and broke neck now in a wheelchair. Show how to extend ladder safely, cover why not to extend ladder too much – have less than 3 rungs overlap. how to walk the ladder up using 2 guys – one acts as a stop for one end while the other lifts the ladder and slowly walks forwards raising the ladder as he moves forward. How to walk the ladder up using 1 guy – Push ladder against solid structure – a curb or building or something – and the lone worker raises the ladder and slowly walks forward lifting the ladder as he goes. Explain why this is the best way because it isn’t causing the employee to strain or stretch awkwardly. Explain why to extend ladder more than 1 meter pass structure employee is obtaining access to. Health and safety regulations. Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) Explain why employee can’t use top 3 rungs of ladder. Discuss best angle for the ladder to be to the building 1 meter out for every 4 meters up. Show why it needs to be as close to that angle as possible. Too close ladder will fall back on user. Too far away ladder will slip. Demonstrate how to lash the ladder to a structure. Using the steel structure we have in the unit, tie the ladder to the RSJ using a square hitch. Explain why this is needed for a safe working method.PassFailGet employee to try. Show how to foot ladder. Standing on bottom rung – needs as much downward force as possible – no jamming foot against upright of ladder – more likely to slip. Discuss need to look out for the safety of the other operator. PassFailGet employee to try. Get Slip plate out of van. Explain how to use slip plate properly. Show how to use slip plate. PassFailGet employee to try. Add conventional window cleaning from ladders. Mention not leaning, overreaching, 3 points of contact on ladder at all times. Show how to carry equipment up a ladder. Keeping as many points of contact with the ladder as possible. Lift on to ladder. Get 3 points of contact. Lift again. Not overreaching. Ascend ladder maintain 3 points of contact. Repeat process to ascend ladder safely. Using LadderShow how to inspect each of the ladders the employee may need to use Step ladder 3m double Extension ladder 5m Triple Zargee Discuss why it is important to inspect everyday were possible or as often as possible. Emphasise importance of safety above doing the job. Get employee to inspect a few different ladders. SecurityShow how to strap the ladder to the roof rack. PassFailExplain the system for putting straps on driver’s seat when unloading ladder. Explain why this is important. Mention the consequences of the driver not safely strapping on the ladders. Get employee to strap ladders onShow how to lock ladders on to roof rack. Explain why this is needed and the consequences if the driver loses the ladders. Get employee to lock the ladders on. Risks Explain the need to assess the conditions of the ground, the building and the weather before using a ladder. Mention this can change if the employee has cleaned the building 20 times. Summarise Practical Review using PPE and get employee to show correct methods of use for each piece. Emphasise need of use for safety. Review using ladders - with the ladders loaded and locked on to van get employee to unload ladders, inspect them and use them using the online pre user check (must be completed)Examination Employee must check the conditions to see if it is suitable to use the ladder. Then they must unload ladders from van – check manual handling techniques and straps on drivers seat. Inspect ladder if ok to use. Erect them against the side of Hilo building – using slip plate - check correct method. Get employee to remove step ladder from van open them up – making sure to lock off braces. Inspect them to make sure they are fit for use. Give employee different scenarios for using step ladder i.e. uneven ground, balcony, flat roof. Using a ladder inside the unit - employee to show how to tie off a ladder – using a square hitch, how to foot a ladder.Practical At the unit employee to demonstrate all training so far If employee is at the unit – Repeat practical instruction for Reach and Wash window cleaning. Review equipment in van. Repeat practical instruction for Conventional window cleaning. Quiz employee as to name, location and how to maintain different pieces of equipment the employee will be using everyday i.e. Squeegee, Applicator, Scraper, Extension Pole, Water Fed Poles, Hoses, Micro bore Fittings, Step Ladders, Ladders. Can a ladder be used in cold weather?Using a ladder in cold weather can present more hazards than normal including slippery landing area or slippery rungs. Therefore, it is best to avoid using a ladder in cold weather. Instead use an alternative method i.e. RAW or return at a later date to complete that part.Training completion Supervisor signature Sign Here Submit
