Show how to clean including pressure, adjusting water flow and rinsing off windows.

WFP in cold weather

Winter months for window cleaners means very cold hands, freezing hoses, freezing water, potentially cold & wet feet, and many more hazards to contend with.

Planning is Key – Assessing hazards.

Keep up to date with the weather forecast so you can prepare the day/night before. This may mean ensuring you have the right equipment and clothing required for tasks. Most winter related problems can be avoided with good preparation.

Equipment / water fed pole system.

When water turns to ice it expands, anything full of water is a risk of cracking or breaking when temperatures drop. If the forecast is anywhere near zero degrees or below the prepare the evening before.

Working – reduce water spillage.

Freezing cold weather causes problems whilst cleaning. Excess water left can cause a slip hazard to anyone so the less water spillage in cold weather the better. You must act before, during and after cleaning.

Gritting/Salting

Give a generous spread of salt / grit to areas with water spillage. Pay particular attention to areas where people will be
walking, i.e., entrance ways, walkways etc. Salt can stop ice from forming and causing a slip hazard.

Avoid water freezing while you work

Window cleaning in below zero temperatures can cause water to freeze on windows or in the WFP system.
